This week’s 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks prompt is Military, and it couldn’t be more fitting with Memorial Day on the horizon. It’s a time to honor those who served, and also a reminder of the importance of preserving their stories for future generations.
When we think of researching military records, the National Archives often comes to mind first. But don’t overlook your state archives—they often hold rich and unique records that fill in the gaps left by federal files.
For those researching St. Clair County ancestors, one compelling chapter of local military history took place in 1898, when Michigan’s Governor issued a call for volunteers during the Spanish-American War. Among the four regiments raised in the state was the 33rd Michigan Infantry, and Company F of that regiment was filled with men from St. Clair County.
I’m honored to share a historic photo taken during the Spanish-American War of several men from Company F. The persons names associated with the image are:
Jonathan Haas, William McKensie, Herb Probitt, Aly McDonald, Thomas Rigby, Alfred Bowers, Tim Barron, Clair Black, Corporal Davis, Corporal Dillon
In the photograph, the First Sergeant sits on the front left, with the Quartermaster to the front right. The other three seated men are Sergeants, while those standing behind them hold the rank of Corporal.
