The St. Clair County Library System (SCCLS) announces its latest collection – the Library of Things!
With our Library of Things, your SCCLS library card gives you access to a wide variety of nontraditional entertaining and useful items, intended to support the educational, recreational, and informational needs of our community. Looking to complete a DIY project around the house, explore a new crafting hobby, or host a backyard game night? We may have exactly what you need.
Here are some examples of what you can borrow:
- Hobbies & Entertainment: Metal detectors, record players, gaming consoles, musical instruments, and karaoke machines.
- Outdoor Activities: snowshoes & trekking poles, sleds, umbrellas, yard games, tents, coolers, and camping chairs
- Practical Tools: Handy equipment like post drivers, collapsible wagons, leaf blowers, and battery chargers
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can borrow from the Library of Things?
Borrowing is an exclusive perk for St. Clair County Library System cardholders with an account in good standing. Our collection is available only to SCCLS cardholders aged 18 and older.
How much does it cost?
There is absolutely no charge or deposit required to check out these items. However, borrowers are solely responsible for the materials and will be billed for the repair or replacement cost associated with any damage or loss, excluding normal wear and tear. The Library maintains a list of replacement costs, available upon request.
How long can I keep an item?
Library of Things items check out for exactly two (2) weeks. Please note that there are no renewals available for these items at this time.
How many items can I borrow at once?
Patrons may have up to five (5) Library of Things items checked out at the same time.
Where can I pick up and return my items?
Right now, the physical collection is housed at our main branch in Port Huron, but items can be sent to any branch for you to pick up. Several of our interested branches are also currently building their own collections!
All items must be returned directly to library staff from the exact St. Clair County Library System branch where the item was borrowed. Items may not be returned via book drops or left outside any library facility.
What are my responsibilities when borrowing an item?
- Borrowers agree to follow all library policies, state and federal laws, and the specific lending rules for the item borrowed.
- All items must be returned clean and in the exact same condition as when they were checked out.
- If a borrowed item becomes unsafe or falls into a state of disrepair, you must immediately discontinue use and notify the Library of the issue upon returning the item.
- The Library provides items "as is" and is not responsible for defects, loss of data, or any consequences, claims, or liabilities arising from the use of the items. Borrowers (or their guardians) agree to hold the Library harmless from any liability related to borrowing the items.
- SCCLS reserves the right to temporarily remove items from circulation for library-sponsored programs or routine maintenance, and to deny or discontinue borrowing privileges at its discretion.
